Composition of the Sonata for Violin & Piano, opus 37, began in November 2001 and was completed on January 10th, 2002. Shortly before its completion, I began to work on my Elegy for solo violin and orchestra entitled Smyrna, the City that Traveled in the Sky, opus 38. The Elegy was commissioned by the Athens Concert Hall, on the occasion of the 40 years which had elapsed since the death of Greek composer Manolis Kalomiris. Smyrna was given its first performance at the Athens Concert Hall, by the Camerata Orchestra under Alexandre Myrat on December 10th, 2002. The violin solo was performed by Georgios Demertzis. I was amazed at the amount of thought he had given my score. His playing, as I said at the time, and let me say it again, was like a philosophical essay. I felt as if the piece were being erased from my memory with each rehearsal, and when silence prevailed at the end it was returned to me new and transubstantiated. I felt emotionally perturbed by this experience, and at the same time it was as if a tender spell had been cast on me.

Instead of attempting to thank him in any other way, on the evening of the concert I placed the original manuscript of the Sonata, with the ink still drying on the first page where I had dedicated it, and offered it to him with all of my gratitude.

The Sonata was first performed at the Athenaeum recital hall in Athens on March 9th, 2004, by Georgios Demertzis, violin and Thanassis Apostolopoulos, piano.
