Three stylistic studies, for solo piano (2011)
based on Macedonian folk tunes

1. Lullaby (study on Nikos Skalkottas)
2. "Eleven" (study on Yannis Constantinidis)
3. Little apple tree (study on Manos Hadjidakis)
These three short pieces for piano attempt a fragile conjunction of diverse elements. One pole is the folk music idiom, as expressed by Macedonian song or dance, and the other pole is the art music idiom, as expressed by three important Greek composers of the 20th century: Nikos Skalkottas, Yannis Constantinidis and Manos Hadjidakis. Through my dual status as composer-musicologist, I attempt the deconstruction/analysis of these composers' style, as manifested in representative works of them (particularly in Skalkottas' "Passacaglia", Constantinidis' "44 piano miniatures" and Hadjidakis' "Little white shell"), and the reconstruction/composition within the bipolar framework mentioned above. I hope that this work inspires young pianists into the deeper exploration of the musical heritage left by these three important Greek artists.
The work was composed after Dimitris Ioannou's call for scores for a collection of piano pieces in honor of Mary Papadopoulou, ex piano teacher at the State Conservatory of Thessaloniki. Its first performance was made by Titos Gouvelis in May 2012 in Athens. The work is included in the CD "Contemporary Greek Music for Solo Piano" (Phasma-Music, 2021), performed by Fani Karagianni.

Six Miniatures for solo piano (2010)
(homage to George Crumb)

The work stems from a musical monogram, a core pitch structure formed by the correspondence of selected letters from the composer's name to musical pitches, that provides –through various transformations– the harmonic material for the six short interconnected pieces. Each miniature has a different pitch center, character and mood, but all six are united through the common structural core, creating an unbroken expressive gesture, with recurring elements and contrasting musical textures. The miniatures should be performed as an integrated work and not separately (without any break between them).
The piece is a homage to the American composer George Crumb, incorporating subtle quotations from his "Christmas Suite" for piano.
The work is dedicated to Fani Karagianni, who also made its first performance in May 2010 in Thessaloniki. The piece is included in the CD "Costas Tsougras: Monograms - Solo and Ensemble Works" (Phasma-Music, 2021) performed by her.

Twelve Variations, for solo piano (1995)
The Τheme of the work is derived from two simple rhythmic elements, the succession of two eighth-notes (thesis-arsis) and two sixteenth-notes (arsis-thesis), which create a normative eight-bar period with the use of a symmetrical 12-tone series. The following twelve variations of the theme explore the transformational potentiality of the thematic elements through a diversity of compositional processes, exploiting the sonic spectrum of the instrument through a variety of different pianistic styles. The full circle of the variations concludes with the echoing return of the theme at the end of the piece.
The work is dedicated to Uwe Matschke, who also made its first performance in February 2000 in Weimar (Germany). The piece is also included in Uwe Matschke's CD entitled "Piano Works" (with works by J. S. Bach, F. Liszt and C. Tsougras) published in 2011 by the University of Macedonia (Thessaloniki).
