The “Aurora” for piano trio was composed in January 2011 in Santorini, Greece. This piece consists of 4 parts that are heard “attacca”. It is characterized by a minimalistic aura not only due to its economy in the themes used, but also because of its persistent and repetitional patterns.
The first and introductory part (allegro moderato) uses two small themes in piano (with two or three notes) which like a persistent bass (basso ostinato) cultivate a contrary taste against the lyric themes of the violin and the violoncello. In the middle of the first part, an expressive andante cantabile emerges and culminates, leaving then its position at the original instrumental themes.
The second part, which is an allegro, is based upon a theme of three violoncello and violin notes , and it constitutes the counterbalance factor to the first part by being wiry and by constantly changing its harmonic character in such a manner so as to transfer the audience to a new dimension of different emotions and colours.
The third part, the most multidimensional of the four, starts with a theme at the left piano hand and by using asymmetric, continuous and melodic motives widens constantly the polyphony, up to a point that three instruments play repeatedly eight themes. It ends firstly by abstracting one of the instruments’ voices, then the violoncello themes and it finishes with an annihilation appetite, leaving just the exposed theme of the violin.
The fourth and final part, an allegro energico, uses as the main ingredient a series of five notes usually with an upward trend, which alternates with strong rhythmical features in all three instruments. The piece ends with the full degradation of the whole theme through an intense rhythmical motif.
