A few words about Lament
The piece Lament for solo trumpet was composed during August and September 2007. Lament was influenced by my own personal reaction to the big forest-fires and the ensu-ing ecological disaster which stigmatized that summer of 2007 in Greece. The fires and the following devastation and grief, were not exactly the cause for the composition of this piece of music; all the same it was a very painful occasion for me to come to terms with my disappointment for our present situation as disoriented human beings, lost in our own private worlds, seeking only for economic success and power, departing from politi-cal ideologies and social commitment. This “burnt” summer became for me a clear symptom of a general decline of human values and it was for that that I “lamented” in my own way.
From the musical point of view, the piece opens with a small motif, which is a combina-tion of chromatic and whole-tone intervals. This motif is developing all through the piece while at the same time new musical ideas are coming up. The piece closes with the re-appearance of the initial motif which is serving as a coda as well.
