“Tenutes” constitute the basis of the study of all bowed string instruments. They play a very decisive role in the development of technique as they aim to improve stability and control of the bow, keeping it relaxed so that a clear, resonant, bright, homogenous and controlled sound is produced.
“Tenutes” play exactly the same role in the study of guitar technique, as the hairs of a bow are to the violinist what the nails of the right hand are to the guitarist. That is to say that a guitarist’s nails touch the string in order for sound to be produced.
As a guitar cannot produce a continuous sound like bowed instruments, and because the guitar is polyphonic, the possible combinations are limitless.
On bowed instruments, “Tenutes” are practised on open strings. The same could be done on the guitar but I thought it more advantageous to introduce some relatively simple formulas to keep the left hand alert.
