Dimitris Michaelides was born in Constantinople in 1920. He graduated from Varvakio High School of Athens.
He started Music studies at the Conservatory of Athens and later on, at the National Conservatory where he studied piano, harmony, counterpoint and fugue. He is also graduate of the Law Faculty of Athens University.
He has worked at the National Theater as a pianist (1940-42) and at the National Opera of Greece as a pianist and conductor of the orchestra. Near the Austrian conductor of the National Opera Walter Pfeffer, he specialized in Viennese operetta. He has conducted Italian operas as well as Viennese and Greek operettas for a number of years (1943-1973 and 1984-1986).
He co-operated with the Greek Radio and T.V. programs, as a pianist (1946 -1984) and as conductor of the Symphonic Orchestra of EIRT in opera programs (1966-1974). He has taken part, playing the piano, in a great number of concerts in Greece and abroad. He has, also, taken part in concerts organized by the Union of Greek Composers and the Greek Ministry of Civilization.
He was professor of the National Conservatory (1957-1991) and of the Theater School of Kostis Michaelides. In 1974 he was appointed at the Conservatory of Athens where he worked until 1992.
Dimitris Michaelides was vice-president of the Panhellenic Musical Union, member of the Council of the Union of the Greek Composers, General Secretary and President of the National Music Council of UNESCO (1981-1991).
He has composed over 45 works, including pieces for piano, songs based on the poetry of Greek poets, pieces for chamber music and chorus music.

For piano: Preludes, Impromptu (Dedication -1979), Etude Chromatique (1985), Fantasy(1985), Toccata (1986), Etude in Do (1994) etc.
For voice: Songs, Vocalise etude for mezzo soprano (1957), “Pentastich” for soprano or mezzo soprano, string quartet and piano (1986) etc.
Chamber music: Prelude and scherzo for flute and piano (1989), Duo (1990) and Horizons for trumpet and piano (1995), Sonata for clarinet and piano (1992) etc.
