VRONDOS HARIS


 

Haris Vrondos was born in 1951, in Vitina-Arcadia, Greece. In 1963 he began studies music (guitar) in the Greek Conservatory of Lefkada. Between 1974-75, he took piano lessons with Eleni Zioga in Athens. During the same period, he attended seminars in electronic music, under the direction of Guenter Becker, stimulated his interest in composition. For three years (1979-81) he was a student of J. A. Papaioannou in the counterpoint. He has worked as a music critic in the daily Press ("Rizospastis" 1974-76), and in various literary journals ("Music", "The Tree", "Review and Texts", "High Lights"). Many of his writings have oppeared in literary and critical magazines. He has written four books on various music: Diabolus in Musica (Gutenberg, 1982), Low Hearth (Nefeli, 1997), For Nikos Skalkotas (Nefeli, 1999), Metronome for Small and Big Arrhythmias (Nefeli, 2005). Between 1976 and 1981 he gave private piano and guitar lessons. Since 1982 he has also worked at the Greek State Radio (First and Third Program) as a presenter and producer of musical and musicological programs. In 1983, together with other musicians and writers he founded the review, “Nissos” which combined music and poetry, by producing tape recordings of the poetry published in the review accompanied by independent musical compositions. In editions “Nissos” organized poetry readings and musical performances in many cities including Athens across Greece. He was also instrumental in founding another journal, “Review and Texts”, wich focused on literature and criticism. Between 1987 and 1990 he was a member of the Govering Body of the Union of Greek Composers. In 1989 he visited the U.S.A as a guest of the American Government, a trip which gave him the opportunity to study more closely he musical life of the country and get to know american composers, musicians and professors of music. From 1994 until 2003 he tougth History of Music in the Municipal Conservatory of Ano Liossia (Athens). His work can be divided in three periods: 1. 1969-80: a period of intense experimentation, which produced a number of works starting with the Suicides (1969) and ending with the Monologue (1981). 2. 1982-86: this period is defined by works as diverse as the, which stylisically,  howerer, employ late romantic and modernist techniques (First Symphony, 1982, Black Music, 1985 and Second Symphony, 1986). 3. 1986: this period includes the operas opens with the composition of the opera “The Possessed”, “Alcibiade”,  “Requiem Akhmatova”, “The Trial” and his cantata “Julian the Apostate”. In this last period his musical language become even more personal and  recognizable. Haris Vrondos has repeatedly accepted commissions from institutions and organizations (Organization of Athens Concert Hall - ALEA III-Boston University - Greek Ballet (Chorodrama) - Union of Greek Composers - Organization of Cultural Capital of Salonica, University of Sorbonne). He has often organized concerts in which he presented his chanhes music works. With chamber music works of his: (Progressive Association of Immitos, 1980 - Odeon Athenaeum, 1995 - National Gallery, 1996 - Benaki Museum, 2002), while soloists and orchestras in Greece and abroad have performed many of his compositions.
