SPINÈI MARCEL

Marcel Spinèi - composer, celloist, conductor, musicologist, prof. Dr., editor

From the book of Viorel Cosma, “LEXICON OF ROMANIAN COMPOSERS”, TOME 8, Bucharest, 2006

Marcel Spinèi was born on June 21 st, 1950 in Craiova, Romania, his father - Ilie Spinèi, his mother - Maria Spinèi (nee Ropceanou), to a family of priests and musicians attested - during 5 generations - in Bessarabia, Romania. The priest and composer of religious music Gavriil Musicesco - uncle - e.g., may be cited, or Marcel’s great grandfather, priest Ioan Spinèi, or grandfather, priest Constantin Spinèi, who assembled excellent folk song collections from the same region of Bessarabia. The fascicles contained in these collections are now at the Orhei, Bessarabia, Protoieria Library.

His first music studies were completed with his father, theologian and professor Ilie Spinèi. He taught his son the elements of byzantine musical chant, and of classical music, and as an instrument, the classical guitar. The father was impassioned with the classical guitar; he was also an excellent surrealist painter.

At the age of 6, Marcel starts to study the violoncello with professor Constantin Gogan, a disciple of the celebrated romanian cellist and pedagogue Georges Dinico.

At the age of 7, Marcel makes his debut as cellist in a recital of chamber music on the stage of Philarmonye of Craiova. He also studied the piano with pianist and conductor, professor Victor Golesco. 1960-1967 he studied harmony, counterpoint, musical form and composition with composer, conductor of chorus and professor Michail Barca. At the age of 14, Marcel makes his debut as cello-soloist with the Symphonic Orchestra of Philarmonye Craiova, playing: Joseph Haydn - Divertimento in D major, for cello and orchestra, under conductor Victor Golesco.

At the same age, Marcel Spinèi presents in public his own compositions: "Three songs" for voice and piano on poems by Lucian Blaga. This concert took place on the stage of the Philarmonye of Craiova, with soprano Emilia Petresco as soloist, and with the composer at the piano. Up to the end of his study years at the Musical Lyceum of Craiova - 1969, Marcel will pursue a nice soloistic career in Sibiu, Timisoara and Craiova.

1969-1973 Marcel Spinèi attends the National Music University of Bucharest, obtaining the DIPLOMAS, with the highest distinction in 1973. In this University he studies the cello in the special class for soloists of cellist and composer, professor Iulius Bonis, a former student of Enrico Mainardi and Pablo Casals, also a member of the famous TRIO incl. George Enesco, and composition with Dumitru Bughici. He also studies music theory with composers-professors:Victor Tschaikovsky and Sorin Vulcu, harmony, counterpoint, fugue and musical form with composers-professors: Dumitru Bughici, Leib Nachmann and D. Constantinesco, chamber music with composer, pianist and professor Hilda Jerea - the leader of the famous contemporary music ensemble “Musica Nova”. He also studies history of music, pedagogy, psychology, musical folklore, musical aesthetics and philosophy of culture. Following his studies at the Bucharest National Music University, he attends a specialization course in Italy with Giovanni Pereira (1980).

Marcel Spinèi studies composition, especially, with composers: Dumitru Bughici (1969-1973), Aurel Stroe (1982) and Nicolae Coman (1983) in Romania, and in Greece with Iannis Xenakis (1989), Iannis Papaioannou (1989) and Yorgos Sicilianos (1995-1996).

Since 1981 he is married with the pianist Sanda Grigoresco, her origine is Greek, her mother born Saraptsis. Since august 1989 lives in Athens, Greece, because of the totalitarian (repressive) political system of Ceausescu.

Marcel Spinèi is professor at the Athens National Superior Conservatory of Music, at the Music Lyceum of Ilion, etc. He permanently co-operates with the "Center of Contemporary Music Research", Athens, Greece, Founder and President: Iannis Xenakis, Iannis Papaioannou.

Since 1981 he foundet at Bucharest the the Musical Editions “SPINEI MUSIC COMPANY LTD”.
