SEA VESPERS for Guitar
Sea Vespers is a suite for solo guitar, approximately 25 minutes in duration. All five movements are based on melodies from ballades I wrote in the 1960s and 1970s, during my successful career as a songwriter. For this reason, the movement titles are reminiscent of the original titles of the songs. The atmosphere of the composition evokes my youthful memories of lazy summer days at the beach; the calm sea, the leisurely walks along the shore, the refreshing breeze after burning days, the whispering water flowing past when sailing, the plashing of the waves, and the barcaroles sung in the moonlight under the starry sky. All these elements seemed to create a sense of chanting Vespers coming from the sea. Although the tremolo is a common characteristic of guitar playing, there is an attempt at expanding the simple melodic lines of the compositions with variations, modulations, harmonic series and sequential scale passages.
